How to support your child between Kumon sessions
Same time, every day
Pick a consistent 15โ20 minute window (after school or before bed works well). Routine removes resistance โ your child knows what to expect.
Praise effort, not results
Say "I love how hard you tried" instead of "You're so smart." Effort-based praise builds resilience and keeps kids from avoiding hard things.
Sight words as flashcards
Write the 100 words on index cards. Go through 10 per day. Move mastered words to a "done" pile โ kids love seeing the stack grow.
Say sounds out loud
When practicing blends, always say them aloud โ not just read them silently. "bl says buh-luh" said clearly, then in a word: "blast." Repetition builds automaticity.
Read together daily
Even 10 minutes of reading aloud (you read, or they read to you) builds vocabulary, fluency, and love of reading. Let them choose the book whenever possible.
Don't correct mid-sentence
If your child makes a mistake while reading, wait until they finish the sentence before gently correcting. Mid-sentence correction can break confidence and flow.
Review before you advance
If your child struggles with a sound or blend, slow down and repeat it multiple days before moving to the next one. Mastery beats speed every time in Kumon.
Aim for 80โ90% accuracy
Perfect scores aren't the goal. If your child gets 80โ90% right, they're in the ideal learning zone โ challenged but not overwhelmed.
Celebrate small wins
Finishing worksheets, learning 5 new sight words, or reading a whole page without help โ all worth celebrating. Small wins compound into big progress.
How to read the blends charts with your child
Step 1 โ Point to the header (e.g., bl_). Say "This is the bl blend. It makes the sound buh-luh."
Step 2 โ Point to the first word (blast). Ask your child to blend the sounds: "b-l-a-s-tโฆ blast!"
Step 3 โ Go through 3โ5 words per blend, then pause and ask: "Can you think of another bl word?"
Step 4 โ Come back to tricky blends on future days. Repetition is the point โ not speed.
